Strong and electromagnetic decay of mesons

Abstract

Partial widths of strong and electromagnetic decays of mesons are calculated within the framework of Schwinger's field theory of matter. Results are consistent with present experimental data. The model requires a two-photon-pseudoscalar-meson interaction and a direct four-pseudoscalar-meson interaction. The former is shown to be consistent with the π→γe+e- form factor. The latter explains the δ→ηππ and η→π+ππ- decays, and the coupling constant also agrees with the ππ S-wave coupling constant. Some justification in terms of the heavy scalar-meson nonet is given for the four-meson interaction. © 1965 The American Physical Society.
