Abstract

We report the results of magnetotransport and de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) measurements on high quality single crystals of VB2 grown from a molten aluminum flux. In addition, we compare these results to energy band calculations. At low temperature the magnetoresistance of VB2 is very large (∼1100%) and is found to be extremely sensitive to sample quality (RRR value). A large anisotropy in the magnetoresistance is observed. For the field applied along the a-axis, the magnetoresistance increases as the square of the field without saturation, consistent with the presence of open orbits. The field dependence of the magnetoresistance for the field applied along the c-axis is much weaker. © 2008 IOP Publishing Ltd.
