Abstract
It is argued that the ponderomotive potential does not alter atomic energy differences, notwithstanding discussions over the years on intense laser interactions with atomic systems. Alternative ionization energies that pertain to such interactions are formulated, helping to remove the confusion that has plagued these discussions. © 1996 The American Physical Society.
