Abstract

The master equations for the density matrix, which are used to describe dissipation and decoherence and the evolution from pure to mixed states in quantum physics, were studied. The focus was on the preservation of desirable properties like the Hermiticity of the density matrix even in the presence of dissipation and decoherence. The evolution of density matrix in time was followed through the solution of a single, classical, Riccati equation. Results show that the Hermiticity of the operators involved, can be preserved by extending the two-state illustration to a three-level system through suitable combinations of density-matrix elements.
