Abstract
Thermodynamic perturbation theory is used to evaluate the free energy of an atom interacting via dipole coupling with the blackbody radiation field. An expression, exact through order e2, for the interaction free energy is obtained. In the high-temperature limit the result is πe2(kBT)2/3Latin small letter h with strokemc2, consistent with experiment and in agreement with an earlier exact calculation for the oscillator. © 1986 The American Physical Society.
