Abstract

The surface of metal oxides comprises an important and extremely interesting area of surface science. One of the richest and best studied oxide systems consists of the 3d-transition-metal oxides, whose surfaces exhibit multi-valent cations, a variety of crystal structures and complex adsorption sites. The chemisorption of simple molecules on both nearly perfect and defect surfaces has been studied, and the dependence of chemisorption behavior on surface geometry and cation electronic configuration is discussed.
