Abstract

The nuclear level density (U,I) is derived from an equation of state, without reference to the Fermi gas model. If the yrast line backbends, then the effective level density parameter aeff must be spin dependent at low temperatures. The spin dependent components of aeff renormalize the spin cutoff factor © 1985 The American Physical Society.
