Abstract

Diagnosis is a book length lyric essay that chronicles the author’s process of getting diagnosed with an invisible illness. Through a combination of personal memory, ancestral research, and engagement with medical records, it explores the nature of illness in terms of knowability. By making an archive of the author’s life, both in the examination of medical records and family history, Diagnosis confronts the idea of certainty, permanence, and control.
