Abstract
In The Ghost You Deserve, a young entrepreneur has developed the ability to artificially replicate deceased family members using the memories of their living loved ones. Spectral resurrections, as they’re called, have become status symbols among the upper middle class. These chapters follow Raj, the brilliant but flawed creator of BioSpec, juxtaposing the story of his college relationship with a young woman named Amada in 2005 with glimpses of him in the present, where he keeps a carefully constructed representation of his ex-girlfriend in a glass mansion by the sea. The novel examines campus relationship abuse and the unintended consequences of technology developed without concern for ethics, exploring questions of narrative: how stories are shaped, who gets to tell them, and when.
