Abstract

The exploration of differences between Chinese and Western music styles have been popular topics in the research area for many years. Now, more and more composers and performers are concentrating on combining different instruments and genres to develop new, multicultural musical styles and interpretations.

My research in this dissertation focuses on an analysis of Peking Opera and its influence in piano performance. What is the result of playing Peking Opera on the piano? Is it appropriate to mix Chinese and Western music? In this dissertation, I will introduce and analyze two piano solo pieces, Pi Huang and Instants d’un Opera de Pekin, which were written with Peking Opera elements. The analysis will show how Peking Opera is interpreted on the piano and if the effort is a worthwhile celebration of different cultures as much as it is a blending of styles.
