Abstract
Magnetic particle alignment and silt mean particle size data have been determined for sediment samples taken from the tops of piston cores recovered from the Amirante Passage in the western Indian Ocean. Our results suggest that the deep western boundary current (DWBC) is flowing through the passage fastest in the deeper portions of the passage, while lower velocities are inferred for depths of < 4100 m, possibly indicating the presence of a sharp velocity gradient within the DWBC. Sediment waves occur at the margin of the Amirante Passage where near-bottom current velocities may be below the minimum critical value for sediment resuspension. © 1979.
