Abstract

The thermoluminescence glow peak emissions of several naturally occurring carbonate samples excited by Co were spectrally analyzed. A blue (425 mμ) to red (600 mμ) spectral shift was detected for both calcite and dolomite upon heating from 77°K to ambient temperature. Aragonite emitted entirely in the blue (425 mμ) over the same temperature range. A model is proposed which accounts for the experimental data given. The frequency distribution of emissions from samples tested appears to be primarily the function of impurities and not the result of crystal field effects. The aragonite, low magnesium calcite, high magnesium calcite, and dolomite used in this study gave characteristic glow peak spectra. © 1972. 60
