Abstract

This paper presents the development of a microscale glucose biofuel cell using an enzyme modified anode and a metallic catalyst on cathode. The developed biofuel cell generates bioelectricity from the enzymatic oxidation of glucose by glucose oxidase on the anode and the reduction of oxygen by a palladium activated cathode to generate a maximum power density of 9.55 μW/cm 2. By employing a gold cathode activated with palladium, the necessity for an enzyme modified cathode has been eliminated.
