Abstract
Mackowski and White, founders of the Emerging Civil War blog, include nine turning points explored by public historians with backgrounds in each. No contribution refutes another; the editors intend only that their volume serve as a point of departure for readers in search of their own conclusions. The happy result is that we can see turning points for what they really are: ex post facto conventionalizations that make something as numbingly chaotic as war appear slightly more orderly and understandable.
