Abstract
Reaction of nickel(II) or copper(II) porphyrins with 3-dimethylamino-acrolein/POCl3 gives meso-(2-formylvinyl)-porphyrins, which after strong acid treatment give the corresponding benzochlorins. Use of nickel(II) or copper(II) chlorins gives benzoisobacteriochiorins; a modification also gives benzobacteriochlorins. Reductive coupling of (2-formylvinyl) derivatives gives carbon-carbon linked dimers. © 1990.
