Abstract
A variety of porphyrins and pyrromethanes are prepared using Montmorillonite clay mixed with a variety of acids (p-TsOH, BF3 · Et2O). The ease of use of the naturally occurring clay as a co-catalyst makes it an attractive reagent for use in synthesis.
