Gaps in forest ecology
Abstract
The roles of disturbance heterogeneity are addressed, including local and regional variation in the scale of disturbance (including interactions between disturbances) and in the responses of tree species to different typres of disturbance. A 2nd group of contributions is a set of challenges to the classical gap paradigm that dichotomizes forests as binary gaps and non-gaps. Variability (especially in light, but also in many other aspects of the environment) characterizes both gaps and surrounding forest. -Editors
