Master of Fine Arts (MFA)
A turn-of the century historical novel set against the rise of the Pentecostal movement features the deep landscape (geology) of the southern Appalachians, specifically east Tennessee. The story centers on two boys, Wood and Vernon, who come into conflict, first over religious issues, then over Wood’s sister Catalpa who is disgraced when Wood is away during the World War. Their animosity comes to a climax as the Great Flood of 1924 begins.
